James (Jef) Frick was named the 2005 WCUSC Recreation Coach of the Year. Jef, as everyone in the league knows him, is very deserving of this award as he demonstrates the core values of our recreation program with both the U-08 Boys team & U-14 Girls team that he coached this past fall season. Not only was Jef nominated by members of his teams, he also received positive remarks from fellow coaches, referees, & club officials. Here are just a few excerpts from the write-in nominations for Jef.
He is the epitome of a recreational soccer coach--fair, laid-back, a great communicator, and we really see the team gel and improve as the season goes on. My daughter is not the strongest player on the team by any means, but she loves going to practice and the games.
He has a great attitude and philosophy that more coaches and parents should follow.
I have watched him over the years with his calm, even temperament...not like some of the coaches we've witnessed. He always has a kind, positive word to say to all of the players. He does so much for the girls self-esteem, which can be oh-so delicate at this age. He is patient and listens to all of their complaining and laughs right with them when they finally come out of their hormone-induced moods.
He had a wonderful way with the children. He taught the skills that helped each child achieve their personal best, and he did it with patience, energy, and a love for the game and for his players. One of the things that stood out most to me with HIM was that it wasn't about "winning the game" with him. It was always about doing your best and trying hard. He showed this "winning" attitude by placing the children in various positions throughout the season, challenging them to try something different. When many coaches would put their best players on the front line, and sub in and out their worst, He never did this. In fact quite the contrary; he made sure all players played all positions, even if it meant we didn't win the game. When my son expressed an interest in trying out for the goalie position, He encouraged him and gave him the opportunity to succeed. This made a lasting "mark" on my son as he continues to excel at goalie.
He has such incredible sideline behavior. He was certainly a role model for our children. When the ref would make a bad call and the parents would be up in arms, he would remind us all that it is just a game and nobody is perfect. He never once raised his voice, showed any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct, or acted in a way that was not professional. He was a coach, but he was also every one's dad when they were out on the field with him. He made soccer fun. He made the kids feel like a team, but more importantly, he taught the kids how to play like a team.
Congratulations to Jef on this well earned award.
