U-9 Rules and Guidelines

Length of Games:

10 minute quarters (3 minutes between quarters / 5 minutes at half-time)

Players:

8 versus 8

Ball:

Size 4

Sideline Separation:

The team listed as the home team selects one sideline, along which all players, coaches, and supporters will remain. All visiting team players, coaches, and supporters must remain along the sideline on the opposite side of the field. Coaching will be allowed from the sidelines as long as the coach remains within the standard coach’s box (ten yards on either side of the midfield line). Each team’s head coach is responsible for the behavior of their team’s players, coaches, & supporters.  If the coach runs into any issues, he or she should contact the league for assistant.

Substitutions:

In order to have players substitute into the game, they must be ready to enter the game at the half field line prior to the stoppage of play.  Teams may make substitutions on either team’s goal kick or kick-off.  The team in possession of the ball may make substitutions on a throw-in or corner kick. The team NOT in possession of the ball may make substitutions on a throw-in or corner kick if the team in possession of the ball is also substituting.

Goal Kicks:

Anywhere in the goal box

Corner Kicks:

On field corner

Offsides:

Should be enforced at the referees’ discretion

Coaches should check each field before the game to remove any trash, secure corner flags and in particular, to be sure that weight bags are placed along the bottom rails of the goals.

Each team should take a few minutes at the end of their games to clean up any trash left around the field.  It is imperative that the last teams scheduled for the division each week be sure that the field is free of all trash.  That does not lessen other team’s responsibility.  If the field is left in poor condition, our field permits are at risk.

Teams, along with their families, should be on opposite sides of the field from each other.  The Home Team has first choice of side.

No one is permitted to coach or as a spectator from behind the goal line.

If a referee is not available at the beginning of your game, please get started on time.  Coaches should agree on someone to officiate the game.  One possible way is to have one parent from each team do one half.

Parents assisting along the side line are limited to advising the referee that the ball is out of play.  They should not be assisting with offsides or calling other fouls.

Players going into a game on a substitution should be ready and enter the game at the half line.

When reporting your game score to your age commissioner, please include a note on the referee that officiated the game.  Information on the referee should include whether the referee was present, how well he/she communicated to the teams, were his/her calls consistent and was the referee’s ability equal to the level of play of the players.  Both coaches should turn in a game report.

Please remind your players’ families to be alert and drive slowly in the parking lots for practices and games.

The referees are our children.  Encourage them, compliment them and thank them.  It is a difficult job even when they enjoy our complete support and cooperation.

Our coaches lead, first, by example.  Inappropriate side line behavior is not part of our Club.
