Hurricanes Move to 0-1-2 in League Play

The WCUSC Hurricanes lost a tough one 1-0 to the Marple Tigers on Saturday, September 16, and followed that with a 0-0 tie with Aston on Sunday, September 17.

The Hurricanes had a strong start against Marple, a team that moved up a division this year and had a lot to prove.

Aggressive play from Will Mau and Connor Battilana in the backfield and Alex Kemmler and Tomas Brooks upfront kept the ball in play, and midfielders such as Jimmy Scorzetti and Ryan Fogel supported the front line with solid on-target passes. The Hurricanes had a number of shots on goal, including several from midfield from Tyler Gallen, Colin Neilon, and Jerry Baldino.

Although the teams ended the first half scoreless, in the second half, with less than 4 minutes left in the game, Marple scored the lone point to steal the game from West Chester.

In the tie with Aston, the Hurricanes’ defense carried the day, allowing only one shot on goal against Hurricane goalie Tyler Zarr. Several in the backfield, including Battilana, Andrew Brightbill, and Tyler Marraffa, not only booted the ball out of Hurricane territory, but also dribbled downfield and sent spot-on passes to Hurricane midfielders and the front line. This, along with solid ball handling from all players, resulted in a whopping 18 shots on goal, including five from striker Brooks and two from defender Mau, who pushed up to shoot from midfield. Other shots on goal came from Mark Butte, Gallen, Kemmler, Bret LePard, and Kyle Leidheiser.

Some clever steals and crosses from David Natalie, and on-target passing from Ryan Kirkman, contributed to the offensive power. But the Aston goalie fought off the aggressive Hurricanes, stopping all shots on goal, including several headers from the front line.

The Hurricanes’ next game is Sunday, September 24.
