In a stunning victory, the WCUSC Hurricanes beat Concord 2-1 on Saturday, October 21.
Concord was a strong team, having lost only one game this season before facing the Hurricanes. In the first half, the Hurricane offense struggled, getting off only two shots on goal. The Hurricane defense kept the opposition to only five shots, but one Concord goal slipped in from a header off a corner kick halfway through the first half. Wind kept the ball in the air, along with some solid heading from Kyle Leidheiser and Bret LePard. Ryan Kirkman, Matt Pope, and Tyler Zarr contributed to midfield defense with controlled dribbling and pressure on the Concord offense, but the Hurricanes ended the half down 0-1.
WCUSC came back strong in the second half, with much more offensive ball control, including nice settling by Alex Kemmler. That control allowed Tomas Brooks to score early in the second half to tie the game. Several strong kicks out of the backfield by Connor Battilana and diving saves by goalie David Natalie kept Concord at Bay, enabling Tyler Marraffa’s late second-half goal to put the Hurricanes ahead. Concord continued to pressure, but WCUSC held the lead, ending the game as 2-1 winners.
Way to go, team!
