(November 2006) U-13B3 Vipers DELCO Division Champions

(November 20, 2006) Saturday’s DELCO Division 4 championship for the WCUSC U-13B3 Vipers was the capstone to a great season.  With almost half the team and the coaches in their rookie travel season, the Vipers worked hard over the summer to develop their skill level and team play.  The team found its stride in mid-August, winning the Ridley United Soccer Tournament.  Going undefeated and untied during the regular DELCO season, the Vipers went into the playoffs with high expectations.  With decisive wins in the first two rounds, the Vipers matched up against Aston Bulldogs in the finals.

It was a beautiful day for soccer and both teams came ready to play.   Aston competed solidly for 50/50 balls and created positive attacking opportunities throughout the first half.  WCUSC played valiantly on defense and had a few several scoring chances, but the score remained 0-0 at half time.  Although the Vipers had only been scored on twice over the previous nine games, the team supporters were apprehensive.

WCUSC played more aggressively in the second half, but it was still either team’s game to win.  WCUSC goal keeper kept the team in game with three strong saves in a row during a fury of shots from Aston.  Then with less than 2 minutes on the clock the WCUSC Vipers were awarded a free kick.   Using the free kick to send a beautiful ball that landed near a packed goal area, a WCUSC player fought to get a shot off and put it in the net to win the championship.
